An accessory from the manufacturer Brengun intended for fitting to a model of an aircraft in 1:72 scale. This is not a kit of an aircraft nor of a ship, but standalone armament. The set makes it possible to replace the simplified part from the box with a more accurate shape, or to place the torpedo off the aircraft, on a trolley or on a stand in a diorama.
The Mk 13 was the standard aerial torpedo of the US Navy during the Second World War, carried by the torpedo aircraft of the carrier groups. Dropping a torpedo from an aircraft is a demanding task: it must not hit the water too steeply, too fast or turn over, otherwise it is damaged or deviates from its track. For that reason the torpedo was supplemented with auxiliary elements that separated after it hit the water, above all a wooden stabilizing box fitted to the tail section and a ring on the forward part. These modifications, along with further changes, gradually improved the reliability of the weapon markedly and widened the conditions under which it could be used.
First separate the parts carefully and level the cut surfaces, so that the body of the torpedo stays straight, because any twist is immediately apparent on a slim cylinder. Before gluing, carry out a dry run and check that the torpedo seats into the fuselage rack or under the wing in the required position and symmetrically about the axis of the aircraft. Glue the small surfaces of the tail section with thin cyanoacrylate, dosing the drop with the tip of a wire. Before painting, wash and degrease the part and apply primer. Both the base shade and the service markings differ according to the machine and period chosen, so settle the variant beforehand. If you build the wooden parts, enliven them with fine growth rings, as they will markedly enrich an otherwise smooth surface.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a standalone model. It serves to supplement an aircraft kit in 1:72 scale.
