About product

Westland Wyvern S.4 1:72 - resin control surfaces (CMK)

A set cast in modeling resin that replaces the control surfaces of a plastic model of the Westland Wyvern S.4 aircraft in 1:72 scale. The point is simple: a rudder and flaps cast separately can be fitted deflected, that is the way they look on a parked aircraft, and at the same time they have a finer rib structure than can be injected into plastic. It is not a model of the aircraft; you have to have the base plastic kit of your own. The exact contents of the package are not stated here.

The real subject

The Westland Wyvern was a British single-seat carrier-based strike aircraft of the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. The S.4 version had an Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop engine and a pair of contra-rotating propellers that balanced out the enormous torque. It served with the Fleet Air Arm only briefly, but its silhouette with a massive nose and a thin wing is among the most striking in its class. It is precisely the contra-rotating propellers and the sizeable tail surfaces that make the Wyvern a rewarding subject for modelers.

Building and painting tips

First the original rudder is cut out of the plastic model, best with a repeated stroke of a scalpel along a scribed line rather than by force; the plastic is meant to be cut through, not broken. Then level the cut flat with a file and check that the replacement seats along its whole length. Glue the resin surfaces with cyanoacrylate glue applied drop by drop; it sets within seconds and the deflection can then no longer be moved, so test the angle dry in advance and fix it with masking tape if need be. Do not carelessly scrape off excess glue once dry; rather sand it over gently. Paint only after gluing, so that the transition between plastic and resin disappears under a common layer of base.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Wyvern S.4 in 1:72 scale
  • Builders who want the rudder fitted deflected
  • Anyone interested in British carrier-based aircraft of the 1950s
  • More experienced modelers used to cutting into finished plastic parts

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

They can be fitted deflected as on a parked aircraft and they have a finer rib structure, which injected plastic cannot manage in this scale.

Yes. The original rudder is cut out of the plastic parts with a scalpel and the cut is leveled with a file. It is an irreversible operation, so proceed slowly.

On a parked aircraft the surfaces tend to be deflected only slightly and often asymmetrically. Extreme angles look unnatural unless you are building the model into a scene with movement.

Sets of control surfaces are designed for a particular plastic model. The target kit is not stated here, so compare the mating surfaces before cutting.
