This is not an airplane model or part of one but a small accessory: a photo-etched set of pilot's seat belts in 1:72 scale, intended for Soviet fighters from the Lavochkin design bureau of the Second World War. It replaces what an ordinary kit either lacks entirely or suggests only as indistinct relief on the seat shell. In 1:72 scale the cockpit is small, but that is exactly why every legible detail under the glazing counts for a lot, and belts draped loosely over the edge of the seat are the first thing you notice in an open cockpit.
Photo-etched sheet is thin, so belts made from it look like fabric rather than a block of plastic. The set is glued into the cockpit during the build, before the fuselage is closed, so plan its fitting in advance. The subjects are the machines of the Lavochkin line, that is, Soviet fighters with a radial engine used in the second half of the war. The particular shape and layout of the belts corresponds to the period Soviet arrangement, which differs from Western four-point harnesses.
Cut the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, never break them out, because photo-etched sheet twists at the joint. Make the bends over the edge of a ruler or in a bending tool; a belt bent with tweezers ends up rippled. For a convincing look do not leave the belts straight but bend them slightly, so that they drape over the edge of the seat. They are glued with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount; the excess turns white and shows under the glazing. If the set comes unpainted, apply a thin coat of primer and only then the paint; photo-etched metal will not hold paint without a primer and rubs off when handled. Bring out the fittings and buckles with a light rub of metallic pigment and unify the belts themselves with a matte varnish.
This is an accessory for a model. The set does not contain the airplane kit, paints or glue.
