An injection-molded plastic kit of a heavy tank destroyer in 1:72 scale from Dragon. The real subject is the vehicle carried under the designation Sd.Kfz. 184 in its first form, that is before it went through the modifications after which another name came into use for it. The smaller scale means a compact model that takes up less room in a display case. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Ferdinand came about by using the chassis left over from Porsche's unsuccessful heavy tank design. A massive fixed casemate superstructure with very thick frontal armor was set on them, carrying an 88 mm anti-tank gun with a barrel 71 calibers long. The drive remained gasoline-electric, that is the same arrangement the original chassis had. The result was an exceptionally heavy and barely mobile machine built mainly around the range and the penetrating power of its gun. After the first combat experience the vehicles went through modifications after which a different designation is used for them; this kit corresponds to the earlier form. The combination of chassis and gun is the key thing about this subject: the long 88 mm with its 71-caliber barrel belongs here and not on other German tank destroyers.
In 1:72 scale it is mainly the cleanliness of the work that decides the result. Clean up the parts carefully and sand the joints on the superstructure, because large flat surfaces are unforgiving. Finish and paint the running gear and the tracks separately, because once they are glued you can no longer reach the places between the road wheels. Apply the base coat thinly so that the engraving does not disappear. Keep the weathering in check: in a small scale a fine wash and light dust look natural, while strong effects would visually overwhelm the model. On the edges a very restrained highlight in a lighter shade works well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
