About product

Vacuum-formed canopy for the Westland Wyvern S.4 in 1:72 scale (Mark I)

A vacuum-formed clear canopy for a model of the Wyvern in the production S.4 version, 1:72 scale, from Mark I. The film is thin, so once varnished the framing stays slender and the cockpit interior is legible through the canopy — on an aircraft with a cockpit standing well up above the nose that changes the overall impression a great deal. Anything in the package beyond what the name gives is not stated here.

The real subject

The Westland Wyvern S.4 was a carrier-borne strike aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm, powered by a turboprop engine with contra-rotating propellers — a combination that remained unique at the time. The design came about at the turn of the piston and jet eras and was marked out by a long nose, rugged landing gear for deck landings and the ability to carry both bomb and torpedo armament. The type spent only a few years in regular service in the second half of the 1950s.

Usage tips

On no account trim the molding with a knife close to the part — the thin wall will crack. Cut it from the backing with a margin and then sand the surplus rim down on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, with a circular motion and without pressure, until you reach the parting line exactly, that is the edge where the formed surface passes into the flat backing. Work a little at a time and keep trying the fit dry; you can always take more off, but not put it back. Glue with a glue that dries clear — neither cyanoacrylate nor thin cement for plastic suits clear parts, because they fog the surface and the fumes leave a white veil. Before gluing it pays to polish the canopy with the finest abrasive and go over it with a gloss varnish; the framing is easiest to mask with narrow strips of tape and spray separately.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of British carrier-borne aircraft of the 1950s in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to display a model with the cockpit open
  • Those bothered by the thickness of a stock clear part on a model
  • Modelers with experience of vacuum-formed moldings

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The package holds only the clear replacement canopy; the model has to be obtained separately.

A thin-walled molding will crack if cut at the part. The right method is to cut it out with a margin and sand the rim flat, right to the parting line.

A glue that dries clear. Cyanoacrylate glue and thin cement for plastic are not recommended on clear parts, as they leave a white veil.

The set is marked for the S.4 version. For another guise, check the shape of the canopy beforehand, as the target kit is not stated here.
