About product

Zlin Z-50 1:72: a Brengun vacuum-formed canopy

This is a replacement clear part for the model you are building, not an aircraft kit. A vacuum-formed canopy is made by drawing thin clear film over a form, so it has a markedly smaller thickness and better optics than the injected part from the kit. The set from the Czech maker Brengun is cut for the Brengun kit.

The real subject

The Zlin Z-50 is a single-seat aerobatic aircraft developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. It is an all-metal monoplane with fixed landing gear and a radial engine, designed from the start for competition aerobatics. Its cockpit is exceptionally visible: the pilot sits high, the glazing is large and reaches far to the rear, so the thickness and the clarity of the canopy tell on a model at once.

Why a vacuum-formed canopy instead of the part from the kit

An injected clear part has to be thicker because of the mold and its inner and outer radii differ, so the edges of the frames look massive and the view into the cockpit is distorted. Drawn film is thin and optically clean, and once masked the frames read like the real strips of the glazing. The canopy can also be fitted in the open position without trouble, which makes sense on a model with a well-worked interior.

Tips for working it

Do not hurry. Cut the canopy out with a margin of a few millimeters around the outline, then gradually sand the remaining film down on fine-grit abrasive paper laid flat, until the edge seats exactly on the fuselage. Test the fit dry as you go. Protect the inside from fingerprints, ideally by leaving the protective film on the part or filling it with a piece of cotton wool. It is glued with white glue for clear parts, which turns transparent once dry and does not fog the surface; the fumes of super glue cloud the film. Mask the frames with narrow strips of tape or with liquid mask and paint in thin coats. Small scratches on the outside can be polished out with abrasive compound or removed by dipping it in clear gloss varnish.

Who the accessory is for

  • Modelers building the Zlin Z-50 in 1:72 scale.
  • Builders who dislike the thick clear part from the kit.
  • Anyone after a model with an open cockpit and a visible interior.
  • Modelers who need a replacement part after a failed attempt with the original.

This is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue, paints and masking material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

With vacuum-formed canopies more than one is customary, precisely because of the risk while cutting out, but check the contents of the package before ordering to be sure.

White glue intended for clear parts, which turns transparent once dry. Super glue is unsuitable, as its fumes cloud the film.

Cut it out with a margin of a few millimeters and gradually sand the rest down on fine-grit abrasive paper laid flat, until the edge seats exactly. Test the fit dry as you go.

It is drawn on a form matching the Brengun kit. On another molding you will most likely have to adjust the outline or the seating edge.
