A photo-etched accessory set from Metallic Details containing machine gun sights for aircraft models. It is a single photo-etched fret with parts intended for two scales, 1:72 and 1:48, so one package covers models of both sizes. The set is not a kit or a model in its own right but a detail accessory that replaces the coarse plastic sights of ordinary kits.

What the set is for

In reality the sights of defensive and fixed machine guns took the form of a thin ring, a bead or a wire frame. In injection-molded plastic these parts cannot be made fine enough, so they come out disproportionately thick and catch the eye on a finished model. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, is a few tenths of a millimeter thick and, once painted, looks right to scale. The set suits above all models of aircraft with an open cockpit or a gunner position, where the sight is clearly visible.

Use and preparation tips

Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and never break them out, as they are easily deformed. Bend them in a bender or between two blades so that the fold comes out crisp. They are bonded with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount; with small parts a pin makes a useful applicator. Degrease the metal before painting and spray a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint chips off. Paint them in a dark metallic or matte black shade and glue them on at the very end of the build, so that the fragile part does not break off during handling.
