A portrait bust from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby in a listed size of 200 mm. The figure of 200 mm is the height of the finished casting, not a scale: a bust is not a figure for a scene but a stand-alone display object, judged above all by the modeling of the face and by the working of the flying clothing. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The manufacturer does not state the number of parts or the material here.
The subject is a Polish fighter pilot in the service of the Royal Air Force with the rank of Wing Commander, captured as he appeared in July 1944. For painting, the decisive elements are the flying clothing of the time: a service tunic with collar patches, a flying badge, and possibly a combination with a life vest or a scarf. The rank of Wing Commander and its abbreviation are a standard part of the name and are not an error of transcription.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry out completely, because mold release agent residue is the most common cause of paint peeling. Take the parting seams off with a scalpel and sand them down; at a size of 200 mm even a slight imperfection is visible. Apply the primer in thin coats, otherwise the fine modeling of the face will be lost. Build the skin up from darker tones toward light ones and let the transitions blend; finish the eyes before you start working on the surrounding skin. The leather of the flying accessories is brought to life by glazes and gentle polishing, and metal badges show to advantage with a muted metallic shade and dark emphasis of the engraving. Even the finished bust out with a matte coat and set it on a base.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
