4 SYNTETIC FLAT BRUSH - Flat Modeling Brush, Size 4 (AMMO of Mig Jimenez)

This is a modeling brush, not a kit - there is no model and no paint in the package. It is a flat brush from AMMO of Mig Jimenez in size 4, the larger of the flat brushes in the range. The fiber is synthetic, with good spring and a decent paint load.

What the Flat Shape Can and Cannot Do

A flat brush has its fibers trimmed to a straight, wide end. That lets it lay paint down in straight, continuous strokes and cover an area without streaks and without visible transitions. Size 4 handles a cockpit, a cargo bed, a wing, the roof of a vehicle or a larger display base. What it will not do is draw a thin line, and it cannot reach into narrow engraving, corners or between small details - a liner brush or an angled brush is needed for that.

Use

• Continuous coats on flat surfaces and larger parts in a base color.
• Drybrushing (dry brush) - pick up very little paint, wipe the excess off on paper and pass the edge of the brush lightly over edges and raised detail; the paint sticks only to those and the relief comes out.
• Picking out edges and rivets on tanks, aircraft and figures.
• Applying washes, filters and dust effects on larger panels.
• Working pigment into mud and dust on a chassis or a display base.

Synthetic Fiber and the Chemistry of Paints

Synthetic fiber stands up well to aggressive thinners - acrylics, enamels, oils, varnishes and washes. Natural hair breaks down and snaps in thinners over time, which is why a synthetic brush is chosen for chemically demanding work and for drybrushing, which destroys fiber.

Care of the brush

• Clean it immediately after use with the thinner matching the paint you used, and never let paint dry at the ferrule.
• Never store the brush tip down in a jar of thinner - the fibers will bend permanently.
• Do not press on the bristles and do not paint by force - the flat shape will splay out.
• Dry it flat or with the bristles upwards.
