A kit of the British submarine Resurgam of 1879 in 1:144 scale. An unusual subject from the beginnings of submarine navigation, with steam power.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Resurgam is among the oldest attempts at a usable British submarine. She was built in 1879 and behind her stood the clergyman and inventor George Garrett. The vessel had a cigar-shaped hull just under fifteen meters long and a crew of three handled her. Power came from a steam engine in an unusual arrangement: the boiler was fired up while still on the surface, then it was closed and the boat moved on the steam it had stored. In 1880 the Resurgam sank while being towed along the northern coast of Wales, and her wreck was found only more than a hundred years later.
In 1:144 scale a short model results, one that fits even a narrow shelf. Cut the parts off the sprue with a sharp blade a little way from the part, sand the remainder down and try the joints dry before gluing. The smooth cigar-shaped hull deserves careful filling and sanding of the lengthwise seam, because on a simple shape every imperfection shows.
A riveted iron vessel of the nineteenth century looks best in dark metallic and rusty tones complemented by a fine wash into the seams between the plates. The lower part of the hull can be set apart and given a growth of deposits at the waterline. The finished model stands out well on a stand with a label, because the subject itself is unknown to most visitors.
For modelers interested in the history of submarine navigation and in subjects that are not commonly met with. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
