An injection-molded plastic kit of three figures in 1:24 scale from the Ukrainian maker ICM. The set depicts a trio of gangsters – two men and a woman – in period civilian clothing, with period weapons and money bags. The figures are conceived as a scene from a hold-up, so the set can be built as a scene of its own or worked into a diorama with a 1930s automobile. The 1:24 scale is typical of car models, which the figures match in size.
The late 1920s and the 1930s in the United States are associated with the era of Prohibition and the Depression that followed. The ban on making and selling alcohol created room for smuggling and organized crime, and small gangs were gradually replaced by better organized groups. Bank robberies and getaways in fast automobiles were among the icons of the time; the Thompson submachine gun, nicknamed the Tommy gun, also became a symbol of the era. The set refers to this historical and cinematic canon – it suits modelers who build scenes set in American cities of the interwar period.
Remove the parts from the sprue with nippers, sand the mold seams back (on figures mainly the arms, hips and the hems of coats) and glue them with liquid cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting. Civilian clothing gives you freedom: suits, coats and hats in muted grays, browns and blue-grays look more period-faithful than saturated colors; shirts and accessories can be lighter. Build the skin up from a mid flesh color, use a glaze (wash) in the shadows and lighten the raised areas (nose, cheekbones, chin). Paint the eyes with your finest brush – in 1:24 scale they are clearly visible and they decide the expression. Do the weapons in a dark steel color with light polishing of the edges, and the wooden parts in a brown glaze. Finally, even everything out with a matte clear coat; the coats can be given a light satin sheen.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
