About product

Decals in 1:24 for the Supermarine Spitfire - late national markings (2nd TAF, 1945, variation 1)

A sheet of national markings on their own for the Spitfire in its late 1945 form, as the machines of the Second Tactical Air Force wore them. It is not a sheet with the markings of a particular machine and these are not technical stencils. The main distinguishing mark here is precisely the period and the variation number: the manufacturer lists several sheets in the ADD24C109 range of national markings and this one is variation 1. Variation 2 differs from it in having larger upper wing roundels, so the two sheets are not interchangeable. The markings of particular aircraft are in the ADD24009 range, and the technical stencils for the Spitfire are on the separate sheet ADD24S109.

The real subject

The Second Tactical Air Force supported the Allied ground forces in north-western Europe and in July 1945 it was renamed the British Air Forces of Occupation. It was precisely in 1945 that its machines carried markings that differed from the wartime state of the years 1942 to 1944, and on Spitfires even the dimensions of the upper wing roundels changed. For a model the period of the markings is therefore as important as the version of the aircraft, and it is worth comparing it against a photograph of the machine you are building.

Application tips

A decal is applied with water: it is slid into place and settled with a decal fixer. On riveted and curved surfaces a decal softener is added, after which the film is pliable and must not be touched. A smooth gloss coat belongs under a decal, otherwise the edge of the film will go white; once it is dry, varnish the whole thing over.

Who the sheet is for

  • builds of Second Tactical Air Force Spitfires of 1945
  • modelers who have the markings of a machine in the Basic Set version
  • those who want the period of the markings exactly according to a photograph
  • 1:24 scale, where faults in the concentricity of the markings are clearly visible

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
