About product

Masks for the Tempest Mk.II, Mk.V and Mk.VI, 1:32 scale

This is not a kit and not decals but a masking set from the Special Mask brand, which belongs to the family of the Czech maker Special Hobby. It holds pre-die-cut self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the glazing of a model of the Hawker Tempest in the Mk.II, Mk.V and Mk.VI versions in 1:32 scale. The masks are made of a thin kabuki paper material with a mildly adhesive glue that follows the curves and can at the same time be lifted off without damaging the paint.

Why a mask instead of a decal or tape

The canopy frames can be dealt with by a decal as well, but in the large 1:32 scale the decal film shows as a step and in sharp light it glints differently from the paint around it. A sprayed frame looks like part of the machine. Cutting masks out of adhesive tape by hand is lengthy on the rounded canopy of the Tempest and the accuracy varies, whereas die-cut shapes fit the first time. What is more, the glazing stays clean under the masks, which decides the overall impression on a large model with a clearly visible cockpit.

Tips for sticking down and spraying

Degrease the glazing first and let it dry thoroughly. Lift the mask off its backing with pointed tweezers, settle it dry and then press the edge down carefully with a toothpick or a wooden stick, otherwise the paint will bleed underneath. Spray in several thin passes, not in one heavy coat. The proven order is the interior shade on the inner sides of the frames first, then the base coat once it has dried and only then the outer camouflage. Take the masks off while the paint has only become tacky; later there is a risk that the paint will come away too. Wipe off any remains of adhesive with a cotton swab moistened with water.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Tempest in 1:32 scale who want sharp canopy frames.
  • Modelers who do not get on with cutting masks out of tape by hand.
  • Those who work with an airbrush and spray in thin coats.
  • Beginners who want clean glazing on their first large model.

The set is supplied unpainted and without a kit. Paints, glue and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Die-cut self-adhesive masks on a backing sheet. The model, paints and glue are not included. The exact extent of the coverage, that is whether the set also holds masks for the wheels besides the glazing, is given on the packaging of the set.

Press the edge of the mask down carefully with a toothpick or a wooden stick and spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one. Bleeding almost always comes from an edge that was not pressed down and from an overwetted coat.

Ideally shortly after the last coat has dried, while the paint has only become tacky. After several days of hardening there is a risk that the paint will come away with the mask.

The adhesive is deliberately weak and meant to be lifted off repeatedly. Wipe off any remains with a cotton swab moistened with water; do not use solvents, as they would fog the glazing.
