About product

Italeri 1:32 Panavia Tornado GR.1 Desert Storm, a kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in the attractive 1:32 scale from the Italian manufacturer Italeri. The Desert Storm boxing depicts the Royal Air Force Tornado GR.1 as it flew over Iraq and Kuwait in 1991. The kit is extensive: it contains over 350 parts, photo-etched parts for fine detail, rubber tires and decals for four marking options. The engineering offers variable-geometry wings, extendable flaps and slats, movable control surfaces, an opening radome with a detailed radar, thrust reversers and airbrakes that can be shown open or closed. A removable RB199 engine with a service trolley is also included, so the model can be built as a maintenance diorama scene. The finished model is roughly 52 cm long.

The real subject

The Panavia Tornado was created as a joint project of Great Britain, Germany and Italy. The GR.1 version was the British strike machine meant for penetration at low altitude and high speed, hence the variable-geometry wings, which combine good behavior at low speed with high speed when the wings are swept. Power comes from a pair of Turbo-Union RB199 engines with afterburners and thrust reversers. During the Gulf War in 1991 the British Tornado GR.1s flew a great many combat sorties, at first against airfields and infrastructure at low altitude, later more and more often with guided munitions from medium altitude.

Building and painting tips

This is an extensive kit suited rather to a more experienced modeler. Use thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action, and try the joints of the fuselage and the air intakes dry first. Build and paint the cockpit and the wheel bays before you close the fuselage; a large model likes to sit on its tail, so consider nose weight. Spray a gloss coat before the decals, then use a softener and finally a flat or satin coat. The desert camouflage comes alive with a gentle emphasis on the panel lines and discreet dust weathering on the landing gear and the lower surfaces; bond the photo-etched parts with super glue.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who want a large, richly equipped aircraft for a display case
  • Collectors of Royal Air Force equipment and of Gulf War machines
  • Fans of aircraft with variable-geometry wings
  • Diorama builders: thanks to the removable engine and trolley a maintenance scene can be built

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. It is an extensive kit with a high part count, photo-etched parts and movable elements, so we recommend it to modelers with practice. A beginner will build it, but will need patience and careful dry fitting.

The decal sheet offers four marking options for Royal Air Force machines from combat service in 1991.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and any accessories have to be bought separately.
