An injection-molded plastic kit of the German heavy truck Büssing-NAG 4500A with a mounted Bilstein slewing crane of 3 tons capacity in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. The box holds plastic sprues, rubber tires, clear parts, a photo-etched fret, decals and string for the steel cables. The kit has a separately built engine and a fitted-out cab interior (side panels, levers, an instrument panel with raised dials), the crane superstructure stands on a slewing base and the outriggers can be built extended or folded under the vehicle. Workshop details are included as well — jacks, block and tackle, hooks and a sling for lifting an engine out.
The Büssing-NAG 4500 was one of the main German heavy trucks of the Second World War; the A version had all-wheel drive and was sent where a road truck was not enough. With the Bilstein slewing crane body it became a workshop and recovery vehicle: with it a technical company lifted engines out, changed assemblies and handled heavy parts of damaged equipment right in the field. The crane could manage a load of up to 3 tons — not enough for a whole tank, but enough for an engine, a gearbox or a road wheel. That is exactly why it is a vehicle that brings a story into a diorama: a repair in the field is a scene in itself.
This is a richly detailed kit with a great many small parts — count on a slower, patient build. The crane structure has delicate parts that break easily, so cut them off with a sharp knife and bond them only after dry-fitting. Build and paint the chassis, the engine and the cab interior before you close them up — afterwards you will not reach them any more. Bond the plastic with liquid cement for polystyrene and the photo-etched parts with super glue. Spray over a primer and lay a gloss coat under the decals. A patina suits such a vehicle: a dark wash in the recesses, dust and mud pigments on the chassis, the fenders and the steps. A workshop truck was a working machine, not a show piece.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
