M113A1 ACAV 1:35, AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American M113A1 armored personnel carrier in the ACAV version in 1:35 from the company AFV Club. The model captures the combat-modified carrier of the Vietnam War with armor shields protecting the machine gunners. The package contains injection-molded plastic sprues, details of the fighting compartment and the driver station, a set of small arms and decals for American and further vehicles.

The real subject

The M113 was an American tracked armored personnel carrier with aluminum armor that, thanks to its low weight and reliability, became one of the most widespread vehicles of its kind. The ACAV designation (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle) came about in Vietnam, where crews completed the main 12.7 mm machine gun with a protective shield and added two side 7.62 mm machine guns, likewise protected by shields. A well-armed and more resistant machine came about that suited mounted patrols and convoy escort in difficult terrain.

Building and painting tips

First assemble and paint the running gear and the internal details of the fighting compartment and the driver station, and only then close the hull up. Separate the parts with a sharp knife and glue them with a thin liquid cement for plastic. Lay on a primer before finishing and spray the olive shade with an airbrush in thin coats. Bring out the engraving with a panel wash, lay dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the sides and suggest wear of the shields with a dry brush.
