An injection-molded plastic kit of the German half-track armored personnel carrier Sd.Kfz.251/20 Ausf.D UHU in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. What sets this variant apart is the large infrared searchlight carried in the body of the carrier. The model offers a detailed hull, running gear with tracks and the specific infrared searchlight mounting. The box contains a decal sheet and usually small photo-etched parts as well.
The UHU (Uhu, meaning eagle owl in German) was the night variant of the Sd.Kfz.251 half-track carrier in the late Ausf.D form. It carried a massive infrared searchlight about 60 cm in diameter, with which it lit targets at night for Panther tanks fitted with infrared sights. It was a pioneering attempt at night fighting at the end of the Second World War; only a few vehicles were built and they were used only in the last months of the war.
Assemble the running gear and the tracks and paint the inside of the open body before you close it with the upper structure. Assemble and paint the characteristic infrared searchlight carefully; it is the visual centerpiece of the model. Bond the parts with liquid cement for plastic and the fine and photo-etched parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Apply a primer and spray the late German camouflage with an airbrush; the patina comes from a wash, edge highlighting and dust pigments on the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
