About product

Tamiya Sturmtiger 1:35 — a plastic kit of the German heavy assault gun

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German heavy assault gun Sturmtiger in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The model faithfully reproduces the unusual, squat shape of the vehicle with its short, extremely heavy barrel. A number of features stay movable after assembly: the main hatch of the superstructure can be shown open or closed, the rocket launcher itself and the escape hatch move, and the loading crane rotates. A figure and four rockets are included in the box. The kit also offers the chance to try applying the paste-like anti-magnetic coating Zimmerit.

The real subject

The Sturmtiger (officially the Sturmmorser) was built on the proven chassis of the Tiger I heavy tank as a heavy assault gun for urban and positional fighting. Instead of a conventional gun it carried a massive 380 mm rocket launcher derived from a naval depth-charge weapon, which fired giant rocket-propelled projectiles able to flatten a whole house or a fortified position with a single hit. At the cost of an extremely small ammunition supply on board and slow loading (hence the loading crane), it was a devastating but rarely used weapon — only a few dozen were built and they were used, among other places, in the fighting in cities at the end of the war.

Building and painting tips

On this heavy vehicle, assemble and paint the running gear before you close the hull. If you want Zimmerit, apply it and let it cure before you start painting. Spray the base coat with an airbrush and use liquid modeling cement on the plastic; the individual track links take patience. Patina is essential for a faithful look: washes bring out the texture of the Zimmerit, the rivets and the seams, while pigments create dust and mud deposits on the running gear and the lower hull. An open hatch and a visible rocket launcher with the loading crane let you show the interior — it pays to work on the inside of the superstructure too.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of German Second World War equipment and fans of Tiger derivatives.
  • For modelers who want an unusual, instantly memorable machine for the collection.
  • For more advanced builders interested in practicing Zimmerit and a pronounced patina.
  • As an impressive centerpiece for a diorama of urban fighting with rubble and wreckage.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A German heavy assault gun of the Second World War built on the chassis of the Tiger I tank. Instead of a gun it carried a giant 380 mm rocket launcher meant to level buildings and fortifications in urban fighting.

The main hatch of the superstructure can be left open or closed, the rocket launcher and the escape hatch move, and the loading crane rotates even after assembly.

The kit allows Zimmerit to be applied, but as a paste-like coating the modeler creates it himself (usually with putty). Paints and glue are not included in the package.
