About product

HMS Hood — plastic battlecruiser kit, 1:350 scale, Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. It is a large and richly detailed ship model: the box holds photo-etched parts (radars, ladders, fine accessories), decals and a display stand. The model can be built in two ways — as a full hull, or in the waterline version (the ship at the waterline, with a flat bottom plate). The superstructures, main-battery turrets, anti-aircraft armament and deck details are rendered finely and faithfully.

The real subject

HMS Hood was a British battlecruiser completed in 1920 and for more than two decades she was the largest warship in the world — the pride of the Royal Navy, nicknamed the Mighty Hood. In May 1941 she sailed with the battleship Prince of Wales against the German Bismarck. In the Battle of the Denmark Strait on 24 May 1941 a hit that reached the after magazines caused an enormous explosion that tore the ship apart and sank her within minutes; only a handful of men survived from a crew of about fifteen hundred sailors. The loss of the Hood is one of the most tragic moments of the naval war.

Building and painting tips

Decide in advance whether you are building the full hull or the waterline version — the construction of the bottom and the possible fitting onto the stand follow from that. Bond the plastic with liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts (railings, ladders, radars) with super glue. Apply a primer before painting; the hull is painted along the waterline, while the waterline version leaves out the lower part. British naval schemes were usually in shades of gray, which suit a discreet edge highlight and a dark wash in the engraved deck lines. The deck can be brought out with a toned wooden shade and a light patina, and the delicate superstructures should be filled carefully.

Who the model is for

  • For lovers of Royal Navy ships and of the naval history of the Second World War.
  • For builders of large ship models who also want to work with photo-etched parts.
  • For modelers who appreciate the choice between a full-hull and a waterline build.
  • For collectors looking for an impressive model with a stand for the display case.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The kit allows both versions — the full hull and the waterline build with a flat bottom plate. You choose the version while building the lower part of the hull.

Yes, photo-etched parts are included (radars and ladders, for example). They are bonded with super glue. Further refinement, such as a complete photo-etched railing, can be added separately from accessory sets.

This is a large and detailed model with photo-etched parts, so it suits more advanced builders. A careful and patient beginner can manage it, though, as long as they take their time over the fine parts.
