Aviaeology AOD48C03 is a sheet of characters for the serials of RAF and Fleet Air Arm aircraft: numerals and letters 8 inches high in a dull red shade, in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet from the colors and codes series: these are not decals for a particular machine or technical stencils, but a set of individual numerals and letters from which you put the serial together yourself. The characters are in a size matching 8 inches and in a dull red shade. That makes the set universal: it suits any British aircraft in 1:48 scale for which you check the size and the color of the characters against a photograph. The manufacturer issues the same series in other colors and in smaller character sizes as well, so the whole choice rests on the color and the height.
British aircraft carried a serial that stayed with the machine throughout its service, as a rule on the rear fuselage. The most usual character height was 8 inches and the most frequent color black. Dull red was used on machines in night camouflage, where a black number would not have been visible - typically on night fighters and aircraft with all-black undersides. The shape of the characters was not uniform either: it differed with the manufacturer of the machine and with the period, which is why the sheet offers characters in several type styles.
The characters are cut and assembled one at a time, so draw a baseline and the spacing on paper in advance and lay each character down to it. Work on gloss varnish, with tweezers and plenty of water, while the decal can still be moved. Check the finished number against a photograph of the machine: the type style and the spacing show in the result more than the color itself. Seal with varnish at the end.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
