About product

Aviaeology AOD48C51 - Canadian Red Ensign tail flashes 1954 to 1965, 1:48

A sheet from the colors and codes series: not decals for a particular machine, but a set of tail flashes for RCAF aircraft of the postwar period. The manufacturer supplies the flag in three sizes and with it separate inserts bearing the shield, because the shield on the flag changed over the years. The instructions give which machines carried which size. The size of the flag and the form of the shield matter more here than the type of aircraft: the sheet suits machines of all units of that period.

The real subject

The Canadian Red Ensign is a red flag with the British Union Jack in the upper hoist field and the Canadian shield in the free part. From the middle of the nineteen-fifties the RCAF used it in place of the earlier British three-color tail stripe and carried it until 1965, when Canada adopted today's flag with the maple leaf. The form of the shield changed in the meantime: in October 1957 the Canadian government had the three maple leaves on the shield repainted from green to red. Watch out for one detail: the leaves on the shield were green until 1957 and only red after that. And the flag is not a roundel - it belongs on the vertical tail.

Application tips

The flag has fine artwork, so apply it onto well matured gloss varnish and press the water out from the center toward the edges - on the Union Jack every bubble shows. Lay the insert with the shield down only onto a seated and dried flag, or the base underneath will shift. On tail surfaces with engraved lines a diluted softener helps. At the end give it a coat matching the sheen of the real machine.

Who the sheet is for

  • modelers of postwar RCAF machines in 1:48 scale
  • those building a Canadian aircraft of the fifties or sixties
  • anyone interested in the history of Canadian markings before 1965

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
