About product

F-8E Crusader, VF-211 Fighting Checkmates NP00, 1967 — 1:72 Century Wings

A finished model from the Wings of Heroes line, not a kit. Mostly metal alloy with plastic parts, and tampo-printed markings that will not fade and will not peel off the way decals do. The manufacturer limited the edition to 3000 pieces.

The real subject

The F-8 Crusader was a supersonic single-seat carrier-based fighter with a design solution that nothing else has: the whole wing tilts upward by several degrees for takeoff and landing, so the aircraft takes up an angle of attack without raising the fuselage, which means the pilot does not look at the sky on the approach to the deck. The armament consisted of four 20 mm cannons, and because the Crusader relied on them as well at a time when other fighters were switching to guided missiles alone, it earned the name the Last of the Gunfighters. The F-8E version got a more capable radar and the ability to carry bombs and guided missiles against ground targets.

Markings and version

The model carries the NP code of carrier air wing CVW-21 and the number 00 of the VF-211 Fighting Checkmates squadron from 1967, that is from the deployment aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard during which the squadron scored aerial victories over North Vietnamese MiGs. The manufacturer released it as the standard version. Watch out for the sister item: from the same squadron and the same year there is also machine NP101, and that one is rendered with the takeoff flaps lowered, so compare the number on the fuselage and the position of the flaps before buying.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of US Navy carrier fighters and of the Vietnam War
  • For a display case: the model is finished, nothing is glued and nothing is painted
  • For modelers who want to see the tilting wing of the Crusader in solid form

This is a finished item, not a kit. Check the version, the state of assembly, the painting and the extent of the package on the box.
