A sheet from the Colours and Codes range: a stock of letters and numerals from which a modeler puts together the tail code of a particular machine. It is black and the size of the characters corresponds to a height of 280 mm on the real aircraft, so in 1:72 scale just under 4 mm. It is not a set of national insignia, it is not a sheet of maintenance stencils and these are not the markings of particular named machines. The manufacturer also issues a yellow version under the part number ADD72C020M3, and the range has come out in red and white as well. The M3 designation belongs to a revised edition, which has more characters on a larger sheet than the older version.
Aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy marked their machines with a code on the vertical tail surface joining the designation of the unit with the number of the particular machine. It was written as a combination of characters and numerals and its form changed several times during the war. Black stands out on a light background, for instance on machines in light gray or in unpainted metal; on a dark green upper surface it would be lost. The color of the code is therefore part of identifying a machine, and it is chosen from a photograph.
Decals are not stuck down with modeling cement. They are applied onto a dried gloss coat, settled with water and a decal fixer, and on broken surfaces with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings close to the artwork. Compare both the color and the height of the characters against a photograph of your own machine; with Japanese codes the unit and the period are what decide.
