1:72 Model Set Combat Set Me262 - P-51B Mustang

Model Set Combat Set Me262 and P-51B Mustang 1:72 (Revell)

A twin pack of injection-molded plastic kits in 1:72 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. One box holds two separate models that you can set up against each other as a pair of opponents from the end of the Second World War: the German jet-powered Messerschmitt Me 262 and the American escort fighter North American P-51B Mustang. The Model Set version packs in basic paints, a brush and glue.

The real subject

The Me 262 was the first jet fighter put into production service. The pair of engines under a wing with a swept leading edge gave it a speed that piston machines could not reach, but it paid for that with a long takeoff run, a critical sensitivity to throttle handling and a short engine life. The P-51B, on the other hand, was a classic piston fighter with a Merlin engine and a three-blade propeller, the first to combine long range with performance at high altitude, so that it could escort bomber formations all the way to the target.

Building and painting tips

Both models are glued with a thin cement for plastic, applied with a fine brush into the joint. Before painting it is good to unify the surface with a base coat, otherwise differences in the shade of the plastic will show even through a covering spray. Mask the canopies before spraying, a gloss intermediate coat suits the decals and matting comes only at the end. Leave the propeller of the Mustang for the very last, so that it does not get damaged.
