Gloster and Armstrong Whitworth Meteor — the fifteenth volume of the Airframe Album series from Valiant Wings Publishing, a specialist publication on the first British jet aircraft in service.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a specialist publication for modelers, not a kit. The fifteenth volume of the numbered Airframe Album series of the British publishing house Valiant Wings Publishing was written by Richard A. Franks and devoted to the first British jet aircraft in service.
The Meteor was the only Allied jet machine committed to combat in World War II: in 1944 No. 616 Squadron shot down V-1 flying bombs over England with it. After the war it went through a long development, the Rolls-Royce Welland engines gave way to more powerful Derwents and the single-seat F.8 became the main production version. Australian pilots flew Meteors over Korea, and the reconnaissance and training versions stayed in service long after that. The NF night fighter versions were built by the Armstrong Whitworth company, hence the double name of the type.
For modelers who build any version of the Meteor and need to tell the early and late forms apart, along with the lengths of the nacelles and the shape of the tail surfaces. It will appeal to anyone interested in the beginnings of jet aviation as well.
