The knob screws into the rear of the body together with the spring collar and limits the needle travel. A knob screwed in therefore sets how far the main lever can be pulled at all, and with it the ceiling of the paint flow. That helps whenever the same shape is sprayed over and over: the hand no longer has to meter by feel, because the lever will not go beyond the limit set. When stripping down, the knob is among the first parts to come off, and among the last when putting the tool back together.
