A monograph on the British Lightning interceptor, volume number 14 of the British Warpaint series, by Alan W Hall. It is a printed publication about the aircraft, not a kit and not an accessory for a build. The series is set up so that one volume covers one type from the prototype to the last version — through archive photographs, color profiles and scale drawings.
In structural terms the Lightning is the strangest and at the same time the most impressive British fighter of the Cold War. It has its two Rolls-Royce Avon engines mounted one above the other rather than side by side, so the fuselage is narrow and tall and the aircraft climbs faster than anything that faced it. It was a pure interceptor: a short endurance offset by the fact that it was to be over the target sooner than anyone else. The final F.6 version carried overwing tanks, a detail that catches the eye on a model. It lasted in British service until 1988 and it also reached air forces in the Middle East.
Above all for modelers who are building a model of this type and are looking for reference on the colors, the markings and the details of a particular machine. Then for aviation historians and collectors of monographs, who will find the series a quick and clear reference handbook to a single type. The text is in English, so a basic command of the language is assumed.
