De Havilland Mosquito Part 2 - Single Stage Merlin Fighters — the thirty-first volume of the Wingleader Photo Archive series on the fighter Mosquitoes with single-stage supercharged Merlin engines.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a photographic publication for modelers and aviation historians, not a kit. The thirty-first volume of the numbered Photo Archive series of the British publisher Wingleader was written by Ian Thirsk. The distinguishing mark here is not the number of the part but the pair of facts in the name: these are the fighter versions and the engines with a single-stage supercharger. The first part of the same series is called de Havilland Mosquito Bombers Part 1 - Single Stage Merlin Variants and keeps to the bomber versions, while the third part, Mosquito Part 3 - FB VI Intruders and 2nd TAF 1943-1945, keeps to the fighter-bombers.
The Mosquito was an all-wood twin-engine aircraft, originally designed as an unarmed fast bomber whose defense was to be its speed alone. The fighter versions can be told from the bombers even from outside: they have a fixed canopy with a flat windscreen and an entry door on the right side, machine guns in the nose and four cannon of 20 mm caliber under the cockpit floor. The night fighter versions were given radar on top of that, whose antennas changed the form of the nose further still. The single-stage supercharger of the Merlin meant that these machines worked mainly at low and medium altitude.
For modelers who build a fighter Mosquito and need to tell the form of the nose, the cockpit and the armament apart from the bomber versions. It will appeal to readers interested in night fighting as well.
