A monograph on the American piston-engined Skyraider attack aircraft, volume number 18 of the British Warpaint series, by Ken Wixey. It is a printed publication about the aircraft, not a kit and not an accessory for a build. The series is set up so that one volume covers one type from the prototype to the last version — through archive photographs, color profiles and scale drawings.
The Skyraider is proof that a piston aircraft still had something to offer in the age of jets. Under its cowling it had a Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial and under its wing so many racks that it carried a load comparable with a heavy bomber of the previous war — and above all it stayed over the target for hours, while a jet had to go home after a short while. That is exactly what made it an indispensable aircraft for the close support of ground troops in Korea and in Vietnam and for escorting rescue helicopters. Crews called it the Spad, that is after the First World War fighter, with a clear nod to its piston power.
Above all for modelers who are building a model of this type and are looking for reference on the colors, the markings and the details of a particular machine. Then for aviation historians and collectors of monographs, who will find the series a quick and clear reference handbook to a single type. The text is in English, so a basic command of the language is assumed.
