A photographic publication from the publisher Wingleader, volume number 38 of the Photo Archive series, author Peter Allam, 72 pages in a softcover binding, text in English. The distinguishing mark of this part is the engine line. The volume keeps solely to the late versions with V12 Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, and the early Merlin machines belong to another volume of the series. The publisher promises to bring the marks, the production batches, the A variants and the specials together into one survey.
After the Lancaster the Halifax was the most numerous British four-engine night bomber and together with it bore the main weight of the attacks on Germany. The Merlin versions changed during their service perhaps the most of the whole family: different nose shapes, different radiators, different propellers and rebuilt gun turrets. That is exactly why two machines of the same mark can differ in a photograph enough to make it easy to mistake them for different types. The later Halifaxes with Bristol Hercules radial engines are already a separate chapter and this volume does not include them.
The book is written for a modeler who wants to be sure which Merlin version of the Halifax he is actually building and what belongs to it. It will also help anyone comparing kits and looking for where the boxes of the individual brands differ. Anyone interested in the early Merlin machines should look for the first part of the series, and anyone who needs the versions with radial engines has to reach for a different title.
