A photographic publication from the publisher Wingleader, volume number 42 of the Photo Archive series, 72 pages in a softcover binding, in English. It is signed by Mark Postlethwaite and Mariusz Lozynski. Against the usual volumes in the series on the Hurricane this is a new, expanded treatment, and the photographs in it are arranged not chronologically but by production series. The first part takes the early machines from the L series to the first machines of the P series, that is roughly from 1937 to the Battle of France. Both parts of the volume keep to aircraft based in Britain.
The Hurricane Mk.I was the most numerous fighter of the RAF in 1940, and it is on this machine that it can best be seen how an aircraft changes under the pressure of war. A two-blade wooden propeller gave way to a metal variable-pitch one, the fabric wing to a metal one, an armored windscreen was added, and the exhausts, the antennas and the gear doors were changed from series to series. When the photographs are arranged by production series, that sequence can be read, and it can also be seen that the new features were fitted retrospectively to older machines.
The volume belongs to a modeler who is building an early Mk.I and needs to know what belongs to a particular production series and what does not. The second part is the continuation from the middle of the P series to the Z series, so anyone building a machine from the Battle of Britain or later should reach for that one. Overseas service of Hurricanes the publisher leaves to a future title, and neither of the parts covers it.
