About product

Hawker Typhoon, part 3, spring to fall 1944, Wingleader Photo Archive 37

A picture book from the publisher Wingleader, volume number 37 of the Photo Archive series, 72 pages in a softcover binding, in English. It was written by Chris Thomas and it is his third volume on the Typhoon. The distinguishing mark of this part is solely one of time, as it keeps to the period from the spring to the fall of 1944. Parts 1 and 2 of the same series are devoted to earlier periods of the type's service.

In the spring and summer of 1944 the Typhoon was at the height of its fame. The single-seat fighter-bomber with its bulky radiator under the nose and its Napier Sabre engine carried both rockets and bombs and became the main instrument of the tactical air force against ground targets in Normandy. With the invasion came black and white stripes on the lower surfaces, with the Normandy dust came filters on the air intake, and with the need for documentation came reconnaissance machines with cameras. For this volume the publisher names detail photographs of the radiator armor plate, the camera installation on the FR version and the dust filters of the summer of 1944.

What the book contains

  • period photographs of Typhoons from the period from the spring to the fall of 1944
  • details of the radiator armor plate and the dust filters
  • the camera installation on the reconnaissance version
  • invasion stripes and the markings of tactical air force units
  • 72 pages in a softcover binding

Who the book is for

The volume is written for a modeler who is building the Typhoon in invasion colors and needs to know what really was on the machine in those months. The difference between the parts of the series is precisely the period, so anyone who wants earlier or later machines should reach for a different part. As reading the book will also interest anyone concerned with the support of the ground forces after the Normandy landings.
