A set of six pots of twelve milliliters each: five water-based acrylic paints plus a matte varnish, put together for building the AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter.

Ready-made paint sets take care of the most tiresome part of the preparation: working out which shade actually matches the real subject. This one is put together for a single helicopter type, so it holds exactly what that machine needs and nothing more. It comes as six pots of twelve milliliters, five of them paints and one a varnish with a matte finish.
The AH-1G was the first machine in the world designed from the outset as a combat helicopter rather than converted from a transport type. A fuselage narrowed to under a meter in width gave gunners an uncomfortably small target, the crew sat one behind the other, and rocket pods and weapon pods hung under the short wings. In Vietnam it escorted the troop-carrying helicopters, and its silhouette became one of the images of that war.
The varnish in the box is no accident. Machines of this class carried a single dark finish on which every difference in sheen shows up at once: thinned one way the paint dries a little glossier, another way flatter, and the finished model then looks blotchy for no reason at all. A final coat of varnish brings every surface to the same finish. It goes on only after the decals and after the panel lines have been accentuated, in a thin film and never over damp paint, because otherwise it lightens into a milky haze that can be removed only by sanding it back. It also pays to stir the pot thoroughly before use, because the heavier fraction sinks to the bottom and the top layer then covers more weakly than it should.
