A publication, not a kit. Volume No. 97 of the Warpaint series, by the author Charles Stafrace, follows the Vigilante from its attack brief to the RA-5C reconnaissance version and its service with the naval task forces.
The North American A-5 Vigilante was an American carrier-based supersonic attack aircraft with two General Electric J79 engines and a high-mounted wing. The bomb bay ran between the engines and the load was pushed out to the rear — a solution that did not prove itself. The aircraft therefore got a second life as the RA-5C reconnaissance machine with a pod of cameras and radar under the fuselage, and in that role it flew most of its service over Vietnam.
For modelers of carrier-based jets who are working out the differences between the attack and reconnaissance versions and their markings, and for readers with an interest in US naval aviation of the Vietnam era. As a source it serves for choosing camouflage and markings and for checking the details that differ between individual versions. It can be read on its own, without previous knowledge of the real subject, and it also works as a general survey of the type.
