Westland Whirlwind in World War II — the nineteenth volume of the Wingleader Photo Archive photographic series, devoted to the first British single-seat twin-engine fighter with cannon armament.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a photographic publication for modelers and aviation historians, not a kit. The nineteenth volume of the numbered Photo Archive series of the British publisher Wingleader was written by Neil Robinson.
The Westland Whirlwind was the first British single-seat twin-engine fighter with cannon armament. It had four cannon of 20 mm caliber concentrated in the nose, so its salvo was among the heaviest at the start of the war. It was powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, and those were exactly what decided its end: development of the Peregrine stopped in favor of the Merlin and production ended after a little over a hundred machines. The Whirlwind served with No. 263 and No. 137 Squadrons, at first as a fighter over the Channel, later above all as a fighter-bomber making low-altitude attacks on the French coast and on shipping targets. It disappeared from the front line during 1943.
For modelers who build the Whirlwind in any scale and want to check the form of a particular machine, its camouflage and markings. It will appeal to readers interested in the less well known types of the RAF as well.
