DARK BEIGE is the tone most often missing from a modeling cabinet. A light sand tends to be too chalky once dry and a khaki is already green, whereas this position suits canvas, sleeping bags, straps, ropes, bandages and the dry soil of a base. On figures it also works as a body base for characters with a strong tan.
Light shades betray every unevenness of a surface, which is why it pays not to hurry. Two thin coats with a pause give an even area, one thick one leaves brush strokes visible. A light surface belongs under this paint; on a dark one it would assert itself slowly and would lose its smoothness in the meantime.
Under decals a matte area is treacherous. A thin coat of gloss varnish on the place where a decal is to go prevents air from being trapped under the film and a silvery edge from arising around the motif. Once dry the whole part is varnished matte and the transition disappears.
Textiles almost never have one color along their whole length, because they push through brush and dry unevenly in the sun. When a thin brown glaze is added into the shadows of the folds and the upper edges are brightened by a shade higher, a tarpaulin gains the volume that an even coat on its own will never give.
