USS Salem CA-139 belongs to the American heavy cruisers of the Des Moines class, the last generation of large cruisers with gun main armament. Ships of this class were built only after the Second World War, and their turrets with rapid-firing guns called for a massive hull with a long forward deck. Salem has survived and serves as a museum ship, so she is one of the few vessels of her kind that can be seen in person.
The set covers the plastic deck of the model with a wooden part that copies its plan, including the places for superstructures, turrets and deck equipment. The wood has a grain and a depth of its own that a sprayed plastic surface achieves only with difficulty, and it shows even in the small 1:700 scale, where the whole model is roughly thirty centimeters long.
First try the deck dry and compare it with the outline of the plastic deck and with the openings for the superstructures; small differences are easier to deal with before the glue goes on than after. The base must be clean, dry and free of grease, otherwise the part will not seat. Spray the hull and the sides before you lay the deck down, so that no overspray reaches the wood. The shade of the wood can be toned down with a dark glaze coat that brings out the grain, or unified with a matte varnish. The gluing procedure and the preparation of the base are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The set suits modelers who want the deck of a postwar cruiser model to have visible wood grain without laborious painting of the individual areas. It is an accessory for a kit, not a complete model; paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
