Deck Grey comes from the color that the decks and superstructures of warships were given. That is where it has its surest use, but it is far from limited to them. A gray without any marked warm or cool shift serves as a base under the finishes of modern vehicles, as the color of concrete on groundwork, and as a neutral tone that will not distort later glazes.
The dried film is flat and opaque enough to cover a dark primer. Anyone building in the larger scales will appreciate that every later effect shows up well on a smooth gray, whether it is a wash running into panel lines, rubbing or salt stains.
The palette is meant mainly for hand painting, because the density matches brush work. For an airbrush the paint is prepared by adding acrylic thinner drop by drop until it reaches the consistency of milk. The neck with the dropper insert lets you take a small amount onto the palette, so the rest does not get clogged with dried residue.
The metal ball inside the bottle spreads the pigment evenly; in gray tones it drops to the bottom especially quickly. A few seconds of shaking before work therefore decides whether the shade matches the manufacturer's color chart.
Further gray tones are available in the same palette, so a ladder from near white to slate can be assembled and used to model surfaces according to the light. Before screwing the cap back on it is worth wiping the thread, because a dried drop on the rim gradually prizes the cap open and the contents then thicken.
