X-20A is the original thinner from Tamiya intended for its acrylic paints. The bottle holds 10 ml, the same bottle as Tamiya acrylic paints in the mini size, which is handy if you need thinner only occasionally or want to mix a small amount of paint. It has two uses: thinning paint to the right consistency for airbrush and hand brushing and cleaning brushes and tools of acrylic paint that has not yet dried. It is modeling chemistry, not a kit.
This is the most frequent and most costly mix-up in the whole Tamiya thinner range, so read it carefully. X-20A (with the letter A for acrylic) is a thinner for ACRYLIC paints. X-20 (without the A), by contrast, is a thinner for ENAMEL paints and it is different chemistry. They are not interchangeable: enamel thinner will break acrylic paint down and vice versa. Before you order, check which paints you actually use. If you have Tamiya bottles marked X or XF in your hand (acrylic), X-20A is the one that goes with them.
The ratio of paint to thinner is not a fixed number; it depends on the paint, the air pressure, the nozzle and what you are spraying. As an approximate starting point, an airbrush usually begins from a markedly thinner mixture than a brush, and the aim is a consistency close to milk. Always try the mixture on an offcut or on the inside of a part first and thin it gradually, in small doses.
