ACRYLIC WASH — Dark Brown Wash (AMMO of Mig Jimenez)

A ready-to-use acrylic wash in a dark brown shade, a 15 ml bottle with a dropper cap, drying matte. This is modeling chemistry — it is not a kit or an opaque paint. The wash has a single task: to flow into recesses, engraved lines and around rivets, to darken there and thereby pull the detail forward visually.

Acrylic, not enamel — and what follows from that

This wash is a water-thinnable acrylic: it is thinned and wiped off with water or acrylic thinner, not with mineral spirits. In practice that means it has no odor, has low toxicity and can be used in a living room. It also dries faster than an enamel.

The price for that is twofold. First, an acrylic wash wipes off considerably less easily once dry than an enamel one — deal with the excess while it is fresh. Second, and this is essential: do not apply it over an acrylic coat that has not cured, as the water in the wash would lift and smear the base color. The ideal surface is cured gloss varnish — over it the wash runs into the recesses and the excess wipes off the smooth surface with no streaks.

What base color it suits

The wash is chosen according to the base color of the model, not at random: a dark wash on light paint looks dirty and coarse, a light wash on dark paint disappears. Dark Brown is a warm dark brown tone — it belongs on earthy, brown, khaki, olive and sand surfaces, on wood, leather and vehicles in a muddy setting. On most military vehicles a brown wash looks more natural than a black one: black tends to be hard and drawn-on, while brown looks like real settled grime. If you need a shadow that does not warm the color, reach for a neutral gray wash; for general emphasis on mid tones, for a universal dark one.

Use

• Shake the bottle thoroughly before work — the pigment settles to the bottom.
• Apply it with a brush where it is wanted, into recesses and engraved lines on cured gloss varnish.
• Let it act briefly so that the wash flows by capillary action where it should.
• Wipe the excess off with a damp brush or cloth in the direction grime runs (from top to bottom), while the wash is still fresh.
• Layer the effect — two light coats rather than one heavy one you cannot save.
