A quartet of acrylic rust shades for tracks, chains and other unprotected steel on combat vehicles.
Responsibility details are not available.
Steel that is driven over does not rust evenly. The contact faces of the links and the edges of the teeth stay polished dry by movement, the sides are covered by a vividly orange bloom, and in the places that neither friction nor rain reaches a dark crust settles that in time turns almost black. Tow cables and chains stowed on the fenders age faster still, because nobody looks after them.
The package covers exactly that range with four tones: a basic rust, its dark counterpart, an old rust turning toward brown and a brown-black for the deepest recesses. In three layers over one another they can build a three-dimensional surface without reaching for pigments.
The final tone is also decided by the ground the machine drove over. A sandy environment scours the metal to a light sheen and a brown layer barely has time to form there, whereas in wet terrain it appears within a few days of standing idle. Choose accordingly which of the four tones will predominate on the model.
You start with the darkest tone as an overall base, then dust the middle shade on lightly and finally pick the edges out with a touch of the lightest. Polished areas are added with a hard graphite pencil or with silver applied with a dry brush right at the very end.
The paints are water-thinnable and mix with one another without limit, so transitions can be softened with your own blend. Shake the jars; the contents are usable straight away in an airbrush and under a brush without thinning.
