Six acrylic shades for vertical take-off Harriers: a British pair of upper surface tones to the British Standard, two gray tones of the Federal Standard and a pair of whites.

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier entered the history of aviation as the first production combat machine with vertical take-off to reach the equipment of front-line squadrons. The Royal Air Force brought the GR.1 version into service in 1969 and seven years later came the upgraded GR.3 with a lengthened nose for a laser rangefinder and target marker. The British machines went through a hard test in 1982 over the South Atlantic, where they took off both from a deck and from hastily prepared surfaces. The United States Marine Corps took delivery of the AV-8A variant built alongside it, with which it opened the way to attacks from improvised facilities in close proximity to the front.
The palette aims at both branches of this family at once. Over British machines a pair of upper surface tones to the British Standard prevailed, that is Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green. American and later transitional schemes, by contrast, rest on a medium gray and a silver-gray shade listed under the Federal Standard. The set is completed by a satin white together with a washable white intended for a temporary camouflage overspray.
The acrylic binder stands up to application with a brush and with an airbrush. The bottle has to be stirred thoroughly before every use, because the pigment settles to the bottom, and the thinning has to be set according to the diameter of the nozzle. It pays to lay down a thin unifying base coat that evens out the difference between injection-molded plastic and any resin parts. Between individual coats it is a good idea to let the surface rest, because the film reaches its final hardness only after several hours. The dried layer is matte, so the resulting degree of gloss is set only by the clear coat you choose.
