The largest step of the star-recess line, 1.2 mm. The recess is the most legible here of all the sizes, so the quality of the surface and the degree of gloss decide. It suits engine covers, brake calipers and other places the eye goes to first.

1.2 mm is the upper limit of this family of sizes and at the same time the size at which the star pattern is most distinct. What merges into a single point with the smallest diameters holds sharp edges here and the viewer can tell the individual lobes. That is exactly why this step is set on exposed places: engine covers, the clamping of calipers, the lower mounts of the frame.
The larger the area of the head, the more markedly it shows how the surface behaves toward light. A high gloss comes across as freshly machined metal, but it mercilessly reveals every scratch from the tweezers. A satin cast looks more natural in a photograph and forgives small flaws. A matte finish moves the result toward a used machine that has some miles behind it. The choice is purely the builder's, because the finish from manufacture is not described anywhere.
Pre-drill the hole somewhat tighter than the nominal value and widen it gradually; a loose seat is then fine-tuned with thin cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a wire. Apply the glue into the hole, not onto the head, or it will dull the recess and exactly what you wanted to avoid will happen. Any white bloom left by cyanoacrylate glue can be wiped away with a cotton swab moistened in alcohol, as long as it has not dried.
Several diameters come together on one machine and the transition between them should look smooth. If you set the extreme steps of the family side by side, the difference strikes the eye; with a step in the middle the whole group looks a matter of course and the eye does not get caught on it.
