Masking and sharp edges

A two-color scheme comes out cleanly when the mask is stuck onto a matured coat, not a fresh one. Press the edge of the mask down with a fingernail or a toothpick so that paint does not run under it, and lay the first coat lightly directly on the edge; that seals it, and later coats then have nowhere to run. Take the mask off while the coat is still young, and pull it at an angle backward toward yourself, not straight up.

Rules while working

Stir the contents to a uniform consistency before use. Apply it in thin coats, as a heavy coat creates a step under the mask that shows even once it has dried. Choose the thinner intended for this range, and the thinning ratio follows the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging. Work in a well-ventilated area and observe the safety instructions.

The choice of masking material depends on the shape: masking tape handles straight edges, while curves and transitions suit a shapeable masking putty better. Whatever you use, test the adhesion on an offcut so that the mask does not pull the coat underneath off.
