Chibi-Maru Fleet Aircraft Battleship Ise/Hyuga is a cute shortened kit of an Ise-class carrier battleship from Fujimi — the name refers to the sister ships Ise and Hyuga in their hybrid form. This is not a scale model but a deliberately distorted, friendly form of the ship.

This kit from the Chibi-Maru Fleet line of the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the Ise class in its later, hybrid carrier battleship form — the name refers to the sister ships Ise and Hyuga. The miniature combines gun turrets in the forward part with a raised flight deck at the stern, all in the shortened, deliberately distorted cute style. This is therefore not a scale model but a quick build with an unmistakable silhouette.
The battleships Ise and Hyuga were completed during the First World War. After the loss of four Japanese aircraft carriers at Midway in 1942 both went through a unique conversion: the aft gun turrets were replaced by a flight deck with a hangar and catapults for floatplanes. The resulting hybrids were meant to join gunnery power with their own aerial reconnaissance and strike. Both ships ended the war in home waters, where they were put out of action by air attacks in 1945.
The build is undemanding and quick. Paint the hull and the superstructures in Imperial Japanese Navy gray and set the flight deck at the stern apart with a darker shade — the contrast between the two halves of the ship is the greatest charm of the model. A fine dark wash will bring out the pagoda superstructure and the turrets. For younger modelers we recommend the help of an adult because of the work with glue.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
