A bold joint for large formats

Nine tenths of a millimeter is the widest groove in this group and it shows in the result. The joint stays legible even after several coats of paint and after weathering, so the surface does not go gray into one uniform finish. The material is white, one millimeter thick and behaves like any polystyrene: it cuts with a knife, sands with paper and bonds with solvent cement.

Where it suits best

Its natural field is the larger scales, where a finer engraving would be lost. It will make the large-format paving of a station hall, the cladding of the entrance wall of a public building or the floor of an underground shelter. It also does good service as the facing of a plinth under a figure, where the surface is supposed to support the overall impression without competing with the model for attention. Another use is a facade, where the sheet is cut into vertical strips.

Before you put a knife to the sheet

• Plan the cutting out in advance; after the first cut the offcut cannot be put back.
• Level the edges with a file after snapping, because the edge tends to be ragged.
• For a facade choose a cut parallel with the grooves, or the pattern will stop lining up.
• Apply the paint thinly; a thick layer floods the shallow texture.

The unit sold is one sheet. One more practical note: the white color of the sheet makes it easy to check whether the coat of varnish is even, because every thinner spot shows against the base at once. On extensive areas that saves time. Storing it flat and away from a source of heat is sensible care for a thin sheet.
