Deep Shade Medium 30 ml, the Deep Shades line from AK Interactive

The Deep Shades line from the Spanish brand AK Interactive is meant for shading, that is for a water-thinnable shade to flow over a surface, run into the recesses and emphasize the relief of a figure or a model. Deep Shade Medium is the auxiliary component in this line: it adds no color but modifies the shading colors themselves. It is mixed with them at the moment when you need a weaker, more transparent effect than the shade gives straight from the bottle. The package contains 30 ml, that is the same volume as the color items of the line.

Use

• softening a shading color when the result on a figure is too dark or too contrasty
• preparing a weaker variant of the same tone for small areas, for example faces, hands and fine folds of cloth
• layering a shadow gradually in several passes instead of one heavy application
• stretching the yield of a bottle of shading color

How to work with it

Shake both the bottle and the shade well before use. The medium is mixed with the shade on a palette, not directly in the bottle, so that the original strength of the color is kept for further builds. Work rather on a less saturated base and add the shadow in layers, because taking a finished shadow away is always more laborious than strengthening it. The excess is drawn off with the corner of a clean brush or with a paper tissue before the shade dries. Always let one coat dry before you lay down another.

Who the medium is for

For modelers and figure painters who already use the Deep Shades line and want finer control over the result, and for anyone painting smaller figures on which a shading color at full strength is needlessly hard. For someone who is only starting out it makes sense to get the medium together with the shades of the line themselves, because on its own it does not replace a color.
