The 15 x 30 cm surface carries vertical boards at a spacing of 2.5 mm, with raised battens 0.50 mm wide running over their joints. Both numbers are in the name and the relationship between them is more interesting than either on its own.
Real siding of this type has boards roughly two hundred and fifty to three hundred millimeters wide and covering battens of around fifty. The ratio is therefore about one to five, and it is dimensionless, which means it holds in all reductions at once. The sheet keeps it exactly: half a millimeter to two and a half is precisely one to five. The credibility of the proportion is therefore settled in advance and only the question of absolute size remains.
You settle that by multiplication. Two and a half millimeters times one hundred gives two hundred and fifty millimeters, the exact measure of a real board, so the sheet is aimed at structures in fairly small reductions. A multiple of thirty-five comes out at eighty-seven millimeters, which is battening, not boarding. The same procedure works for both neighboring coarsenesses that round this brand out.
The battens stand above the surface, so when sanding an edge leave them alone, or they will be smeared. It is better to cut between them than through them.
The corners of a building with this type of siding are not mitered. On a real structure two boards meet at the corner and a vertical batten runs over them to hide the joint, so on a model it is enough to butt both walls together and glue a strip of the same width as the battens on the surface over the edge. The result is stronger than a mitered joint and above all it matches what is really built. The same strip also comes in handy under the eaves and around openings, where the siding ends and needs a finishing element.
