A low display block with a square footprint of 5 x 5 cm. It is the larger of the pair of blocks of this form and allows for models with a wider footprint: figures in a straddled stance, a group on a common base or a small scene.
The most reliable procedure is to lay the finished model on paper and trace its footprint including everything that overhangs. An outstretched arm, an extended weapon, a flying cloak and a stone thrown down by the feet all belong in the outline. Only this outline, not the base of the figure itself, decides the size of the plinth. A free margin should be left around it all the way round. When a model touches the edge on one side, it looks as if it were falling off the plinth, and that strikes the viewer about the composition at once.
Five centimeters is a size that does not yet take up needless space on a shelf, but already allows a model to be turned a few degrees off the axis. That matters in photography, because a slight turn gives a model depth and the shot does not stay flat. The block at the same time lifts the model above the level of the shelf, so the lower edge is not lost and a shadow arises between the model and the surface. In a display case a row of identical blocks gives a collection a regular rhythm.
