Dark brown stone in a medium grain size for ballast, rutted roads and the earthy surfaces around machinery. A volume of 353 cm³.

The medium grade is the compromise that works most often on a diorama: the individual grains can already be told apart, but they still do not look like fields of stone. In a dark brown tone they make a surface soaked with water and oil, of the kind found in working yards, on logging roads and in places where heavy machinery has passed again and again.
It is with the dark browns that working in two layers pays off. The lower one is spread thickly and fixed, while the second is then scattered thinly only into the ruts and hollows, so that an uneven texture arises of the kind a really rutted surface has. The solution of glue and water is left to soak in from the edge; a thick syrup on the surface creates a gloss that is hard to get rid of. Only once it is dry do washes, pigments and possibly a gloss varnish for puddles come in turn.
The material can be mixed without any trouble with a finer scatter of the same shade; the fine grade fills the gaps and the layer then looks settled. The bag holds 353 cm³.
With fill around a culvert one more step helps: before you fix the area, press the track of a wheel or of a crawler into the damp material. The imprint will last even after drying and will explain why the surface is packed in one place and loose next to it.
